Hollywood has had a long fascination with racecars. Paul Newman owns an Indy Car team and movie stars get their chance once a year at the Long Beach Celebrity Race.

It's also no secret that there is always a racing movie in development. Though most get shelved in the script stage because they're too expensive to make, a few gems have come out over the years of trying, classics like John Frankenheimer's Grand Prix and Tony Scott's Days of Thunder.

OK, you don't have your own racecar. Maybe you will one day. But you have a video game console and it works!

So why play fighting games when you know world peace is better? If you want to get it out, RACE. Imagine 700 horses at your fingertips hauling through asphalt, dirt, and over terrain you've never heard of before. And if that isn't enough, you can always crash into the car next to you and call it demolition. After all, it's your game.

Racing is an obsession that you can follow in all genres of storytelling, from the chariot race in the epic, Ben Hur, to the pod race in the sci-fi extravaganza, The Phantom Menace. It's no wonder that racing drivers are regarded as the ultimate gladiator athletes in sports history.

Wherever the race takes them, they come, they qualify, and then they race to finish first; many times to the death.

Learn about Nascar and Indy cars, read the history behind those that died enjoying it, know about those that did live and lift the trophy, and see what draws a billion people a year to root for their favorite.
